I am broadly interested in archive making, the development of digital culture and community engagement. In the studio, I draw inspiration from news, sociology research and personal experience, creating works that reflect on contemporary cultures. I experiment with a symbiosis of techniques, selecting media that best suit the context of audience interaction: images and moving images, texts, interactive objects and webpages. I proposed and deviced this social experiment to facilitate communication between the artist and viewers and among viewers themselves. To break down the user interaction cylce, at the start of interaction with the system, as the viewer browses an art piece, they encounter a printout sliding out of a virtual printer, prompting them to type in their comment about the artwork they are viewing. When the viewer submit their response, the printout slides back into the virtual printer. After pausing for a few seconds, a thermal printer nearby produces on a&nbsp;receipt a piece of commentary about the same artwork from a previous viewer or the artwork’s creator. As the viewer receives it, the viewer is invited to tear and take away the physical receipt, or types in more of their comments about the art, rewarded by more opinions from other viewers. Struggling, I tried to live under the reign of logic by attempting to analyze, rationalize, and contextualize my anxieties. Nevertheless, during these difficult times, I found it a more helpful approach to take a departure from my usual conceptual practice and work in a mode in which I didn’t filter or suppress my emotions but allowed them to be directly transferred onto physical materials such as paper, paint, and clay. Embodying existential feelings, every character in Soliloquy appears as a fragment, a portion, a broken piece in some way. With clay I am able to express crippled, vulnerable and sometimes eerie qualities — mimicked by the material is the fragility and elasticity of life. There is intentional superimposition of these sculptural works and watercolor paintings to demonstrate my ongoing exploration with these media to express with spontaneity, where the rawness of form and process is purposefully preserved. I aimed to examine the ways in which material functions as language, with the application of material revealing as tone of voice.The script for the voiceover for the videos is available in the accompanying project folder for the audience to peruse. While there was push and pull between the fear of feeling exposed versus the integrity of this video, writing the script served as a vehicle to question the griefs so that they may be interpreted in a new light. As it scans through the feed, the extension filters out all the irrelevant ads and suggested posts by Facebook that contaminate your feed. The content you would care about - posts from friends, family and your trusted news sources - are transferred to a much cleaner interface which necessitates more focused reading. FeedScanner eliminates all the distracting aspects of the Internet - multimedia, interactivity, hyperlinking, searchability, recommendations, and infinite scrolling, all of which are put out there by tech companies for the sake of “user friendliness” and “user engagement”. In reality, however, all these irrelevant features are competing for our attention and constantly disrupting us from paying sustained attention to what really matters.The reading interface that accompanies FeedScanner liberates users from the outward train of passing stimuli in order to engage their attention more deeply with an inward flow of words, emotions, and ideas, an ability that many Internet users have been gradually losing due to long-time training of our brains to do more “efficient” reading on the Internet [1].LESS SCROLLING, MORE READINGEach time I land on my Facebook homepage, I immediately feel a low-level panic induced by a false sense of necessity to go through the news feed and a thousands things out there screaming for my attention. I keep scrolling down, quite mindlessly most of the time since my eyes can’t really focus on anything. Five minutes later, I decide to use some willpower to close the browser tab due to a burnout. It isn’t a rewarding experience, however, I can’t help but keep repeating the process every day. Perhaps just as the author of The Shallows puts it, “My brain wasn’t just drifting. It was hungry. It was demanding to be fed the way the Net fed it”. On the Internet, I read a lot, but not really, anything. What I gained from using FeedScanner was a much more serene flow of information. Its quiet, linear way of presenting the information was closer to an experience that I enjoyed since a child – reading a real book. This helped me engage more with the train of inward thoughts (which didn’t even exist without using FeedScanner) while reading the content that emerge on the pages. This forced me to focus my attention on what my friends said. This liberated me from the perpetual low-level pressure to separate attention-worthy news from unsolicited posts. This system has two main technical components: 1) is building a sensing system that is able to send the location of where ping pong ball hits the table to Arduino. I installed piezo sensors to the bottom of the table which connect to my laptop running a Arduino program. This part needs a lot of tuning work since piezo signals were kind of weak and accuracy was low. 2) is using Processing to code the data visualizations for where ping pong ball hits the table top. I came up with three different modes of visualization, aiming to provoke different user emotions - from fun to tranquil to distracting to the point of distressing. Visualization is then projected onto the table top with an overhead projector.
